Standards set no weight. AKC and PetMD give 4-6 lb (about 1.8-2.7 kg), VCA gives 4-8 lb (about 1.8-3.6 kg), Wikipedia quotes 2-3 kg. Same range for both sexes.
The coat keeps growing and is dense and tightly curled, with a springy, woolly feel. It can also be left to form long even cords. Because loose hair stays caught in the curls, very little ends up on the floor. The body is small, square-built and elegant, with a proud head carriage and light, springy movement.1895

Well suited to flats and apartments as well as houses, in town or country. Needs to live indoors with the family, with a safe space for play. Supervise around small children and large dogs because of its tiny size.97

The story where it all began
The Poodle began as a curly-coated water dog that fetched ducks and other waterfowl for hunters, and it is closely related to the Barbet. Its German name Pudel comes from a word for splashing in water. By the 1700s, smaller Poodles were being bred in France and other European cities for town life, and they became favourites of the French aristocracy and performers in travelling circuses. The toy size was refined in the late 1800s and early 1900s by breeders who kept shrinking the Miniature while keeping its proportions; in the United States, white toys were bred from American lines from about 1880. The AKC admitted the Toy to its studbook in 1912 and approved its standard in 1928, and the Poodle Club of America accepted it as the third variety in 1943. From the late 1950s the Toy's popularity rose sharply, helping make the Poodle the most registered breed in America from 1960 to 1982.12374
Fun facts for the dinner table

2
In Stanley Coren's 1994 ranking of working and obedience intelligence, the Poodle came second out of 130 breeds.2

5

Although often linked with France, the breed's name comes from the Low German word for splashing about in water.2
Where the name comes from the story behind it
The breed name 'Poodle' comes from the German word 'pudel' or 'pudelin,' meaning 'to splash in water,' reflecting the breed's origins as a water retriever.6
I woke up, stretched, and hopped onto my human's bed for morning cuddles. After breakfast, we played hide-and-seek with my favourite squeaky toy. I sniffed every corner of the garden and chased a butterfly. In the afternoon, I practiced sitting pretty for a treat and napped in a sunbeam. Evenings are for lap time and belly rubs. Life is good!

Poodle (Toy) tip
Keep treats tiny and infrequent, as Toy Poodles gain weight easily and even a few extra kibbles can tip them into caloric surplus. Choose low-fat, easily digestible treats and avoid sticky, sugary ones to protect their teeth and tummy.
Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise. Terms of use
