Dogs in San Marino: rules, tax and travel

Resident dog owners must register their dogs, have them identified by a vet and vaccinated against rabies, and pay a yearly registration fee. The 1991 dog law has no breed-specific rules.

Rules are national. The nine Castelli can designate areas where dogs may run free.

Breed rules

The 1991 dog law contains no breed-specific restrictions, it only says care must take the breed into account. [1]

Registration and microchip

Registration

Residents must register a dog on the state dog register within six months of its birth or acquisition, with proof of rabies vaccination. Report a lost or stolen dog within three days.[1]

Microchip

Each registered dog gets a unique indelible code applied by the veterinary service. The method is set by Regency Decree and the law does not name the microchip.[1]

Dog tax and licence

Dog tax

No dog tax found. An annual registration fee is set by Regency Decree, and rabies vaccination for dogs from six months is paid by the owner.[1]

Leash and muzzle

Leash and muzzle

Dogs in public must be with their owner or a representative. A muzzle is required in public premises, on public transport and in crowded places. Dogs may roam free only in areas designated by the Castello councils. A chained dog needs a chain of at least 6 metres.[1]

Other rules

Abandoning a dog is prohibited. Fines are set in the 1991 law in lire and were updated by Law 62 of 1992.[1]
