Dogs in Serbia: rules, tax and travel
Pets must be marked and registered under the veterinary law, and local governments set rules for pets in public places. Dogs classed as dangerous need a muzzle and lead in public. Pets entering Serbia need a microchip, a rabies vaccination and a passport.
Local governments set many rules for pets in public places and shared building areas, so check the city or municipality.
Breed rules
No breed-specific rule found.
Registration and microchip
Pets must be marked and registered under the veterinary law (Law on Animal Welfare, Art. 55). The age limit and any fee were not found.[1]
A news report says the law requires owners to microchip and vaccinate dogs, but that this is poorly enforced. The age limit was not confirmed.[2]
Leash and muzzle
Local governments set where and how pets, especially dogs, may be taken into public areas. Dogs classed as dangerous must wear a muzzle and be on a lead in public and be walked only by adults.[1]
Other rules
A dog may not be kept permanently on a chain, except on a running line, and a tethered animal must be released for part of each day (Art. 57(2) and Art. 21(3)).[1]
Owners must prevent unwanted litters, for example by separating the sexes, contraception or neutering (Art. 55(3)).[1]
Dogs classed as dangerous must be kept in a secure space that cannot be left, with a visible warning sign at the entrance.[3]
Travelling to Serbia with a dog
The official Welcome to Serbia page lists the same four conditions for pets from countries on its Annex 1 list: a microchip, a rabies vaccination (21 days must pass after a first vaccination), measures against other diseases, and a passport filled in by an authorised vet.[4]
The official page lists the same four conditions for other countries (Annex 2): microchip, rabies vaccination, other disease measures and a passport. A US health certificate template for Serbia also exists, so a government health certificate may be needed.[4]
