Dogs in Thüringen, Germany: rules, tax and travel
Thuringia requires every dog to be microchipped and covered by liability insurance. Proof goes to the municipality; there is no general Sachkunde test.
The state law is the Thüringer Tiergefahrengesetz; dog tax and local leash orders are set by municipalities.
The national rules for Germany apply here too. National rules
Breed rules
Breed list in the Tiergefahrengesetz removed in 2018; dogs judged individually. [1]
Registration and microchip
Every dog must be microchipped at the owner's cost and the chip data reported to the authority. A chip meeting the ISO standards counts.[2]
Insurance
Every dog owner must hold liability insurance with at least 500,000 EUR for personal injury and 250,000 EUR for other damage, with proof given to the municipality.[2]
Leash and muzzle
In forests, dogs not used for hunting must be on a leash (Thüringer Waldgesetz, paragraph 6 (2)). Other leash rules such as pedestrian zones come from municipal ordinances. The 2 m leash and muzzle rules apply to dangerous dogs.[2]
