Dogs in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany: rules, tax and travel

Schleswig-Holstein requires dogs older than three months to be microchipped. There is no compulsory Sachkunde test for ordinary owners; leash duties apply in listed public places.

The Hundegesetz (HundeG) is a state law; dog tax and details of leash zones are set by municipalities.

The national rules for Germany apply here too. National rules

Breed rules

Hundegesetz in force 1 Jan 2016 abolished the breed list. [1]

Registration and microchip

Microchip

Dogs older than three months must be electronically marked by a vet with an ISO 11784 chip readable with an ISO 11785 reader. The collar tag must show the owner's details; a phone number alone is not enough.[2]

Dog tax and licence

Dog tax

Kiel charges 150 EUR a year for the first dog according to a 2026 calculator that cites the city's Hundesteuersatzung.[3]

Licence or owner test

A Sachkundeprüfung is not required for ordinary owners. It is voluntary, and a municipality may reduce the dog tax for people who pass it.[2]

Insurance

Liability insurance

The official Land page names minimum cover of 500,000 EUR for personal injury and 250,000 EUR for property damage. A secondary source lists Schleswig-Holstein among the Länder with compulsory liability insurance for all dogs.[4]
