Dogs in Canton of Schwyz, Switzerland: rules, tax and travel
Schwyz requires a dog tag from the municipality (tax paid and liability insurance shown), liability insurance, and a leash in public facilities, on public paths and in traffic. A law revision with a mandatory first-dog course went to parliament in July 2026.
The canton law sets the frame; municipalities collect the tax within a cantonal range.
The national rules for Switzerland apply here too. National rules
Breed rules
No breed-specific rule found.
Registration and microchip
Every dog wears an official dog tag from the municipality, issued after the dog tax is paid and liability insurance is shown (paragraph 9).[1]
Dog tax and licence
Dogs of 4 months or older: CHF 50 per year base rate (working dogs CHF 20), CHF 100 more for each extra dog in a household. Municipal voters may raise the rate up to CHF 100 (working dogs CHF 40).[1]
50 to 100 CHF a year
No course duty in the current act. The government's draft revision (July 2026, not yet law) would require a practical course for first-time owners, owners returning after 10 years, and dog importers.[2]
Insurance
Compulsory (paragraph 1, para 3); proof is needed to get the dog tag. The draft keeps the duty with wider cover.[1]
Leash and muzzle
Dogs must be leashed in public facilities, on public paths and in traffic. Exceptions for herding and livestock guardian dogs. No forest-specific rule in the act.[1]
