Dogs in Quebec, Canada: rules, tax and travel

In Quebec every dog must be registered with the municipality and wear its medal, and the province sets leash and dangerous dog rules. Fines run from $250 to $20,000.

Quebec sets provincial dog rules, but registration fees, cat registration and stricter rules are set by each municipality.

The national rules for Canada apply here too. National rules

Registration and microchip

Registration

Owners must register every dog with their municipality and the dog must wear the medal at all times. Fees are set by each municipality.[1]

Microchip

There is no province-wide microchip rule for ordinary dogs. A dog declared potentially dangerous must be microchipped, and some municipalities require chips.[2]

Leash and muzzle

Leash and muzzle

In public a dog must be under the control of a person able to restrain it and on a leash up to 1.85 m, except in off-leash areas. For dogs of 20 kg or more the leash must attach to a harness or head halter.[1]

Other rules

A municipality can declare a dog potentially dangerous after a bite or on reasonable grounds and order measures, and may adopt stricter rules. Fines range from $250 to $20,000 and can be doubled for potentially dangerous dogs.[1]
