Dogs in Albania: rules, tax and travel

Dogs and cats entering Albania need identification and a passport signed by an official vet showing a rabies vaccination. Little about national dog and cat keeping rules could be confirmed online.

Municipalities may set local rules for dogs. None were found online.

Breed rules

No breed-specific rule found. Not confirmed, because no national dog law text was read. Not confirmed.

Travelling to Albania with a dog

From an EU country

A dog or cat entering for non-commercial purposes through a border inspection point must be identified (tattoo, microchip or register) and carry a passport from an official vet that shows a rabies vaccination and any other needed preventive measures.[1]

From outside the EU

The same identification and passport rules apply. The US APHIS page adds a rabies titre test unless the pet goes directly or via listed or EU countries, and a health certificate on Albania's form endorsed within 10 days of travel.[2]

Rabies antibody test

Required for pets not travelling directly or only via Annex II or EU countries, per the US page. Not mentioned on the Albanian page.[2]

Not confirmed yet: Registration, Microchip, Dog tax, Licence or owner test, Liability insurance, Leash and muzzle, Tapeworm treatment, Quarantine. We only show what an official or named source states.
