Coat and looks how to spot one
Short, dense fur; furred feet; seasonal colour change
A round, compact little hamster with a tiny 0.5 to 1.5 cm tail and hair-covered soles that keep its feet off cold ground. In its summer coat it is dark grey or brown on top with a bold dark stripe along the spine, a white belly and greyish ears with a pink tint. As days shorten in autumn, most of the dark fur is replaced by white, then the darker coat returns in spring. Compared with the closely related Campbell's dwarf hamster it has smaller ears and a dark patch on the crown of the head. Eyes are black, or red in albino animals.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Winter White Dwarf Hamster?
A pellet or seed mix made for hamsters should be available daily, with small amounts of greens, cleaned root vegetables and a little fruit such as apple. Scattering food encourages natural foraging, and fresh water should always be available from a bottle. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.5 Pet Wiki plan
What should a Winter White Dwarf Hamster eat, and which foods are dangerous?
Feed a hamster pellet or seed mix as the base, plus small amounts of greens, cleaned root vegetables and a little fruit like apple. Small protein treats are also good. Avoid grapes and rhubarb, and never give alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, avocado, citrus, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, or xylitol.58
Should I bathe a Winter White Dwarf Hamster?
No, this hamster grooms itself and does not need baths. Spot-clean soiled bedding instead, and keep the enclosure dry and clean.34
Does a Winter White Dwarf Hamster need brushing?
No, its short, dense fur needs little coat care. Just check the hamster daily and spot-clean bedding as needed.34
How do I look after a Winter White Dwarf Hamster's nails and teeth?
Check nails monthly and trim if needed, but never cut into the quick. Provide safe wooden chews and hard food to help wear down teeth naturally. For nail trimming, ask your vet for guidance.5 Pet Wiki plan
How much space and exercise does a Winter White Dwarf Hamster need?
It needs a secure, roomy enclosure with deep bedding for digging, plus a solid exercise wheel sized for a dwarf hamster, tunnels, and hides. Provide one more hiding place than the number of hamsters.341
Should a Winter White Dwarf Hamster live alone or with friends?
They can sometimes live in pairs or small groups if they are young littermates kept together from the start, but they are also content alone. Never add newcomers later, and separate any that fight. Males are best not housed together.63
How long does a Winter White Dwarf Hamster live?
They typically live between 1 and 3 years, so enjoy your time with them and provide consistent care.13
Is a Winter White Dwarf Hamster a good pet for children?
They are usually calm and inquisitive, and among the most tameable hamsters, but they are small and quick. Handling works best low down with patience, so adult supervision is important for children.13
How do I hold a Winter White Dwarf Hamster?
Handle gently and at ground level to prevent falls, as hamsters are easily hurt. With regular gentle handling, most become confident and settled around their keepers.34
