Coat and looks how to spot one

short-haired, long-haired, satin or rex coat on a stocky body

The largest of the common pet hamsters, with a sturdy, rounded body, a blunt nose, small dark eyes, fairly big ears and a very short tail. The wild colour is a warm golden-brown on top shading to grey or white underneath, sometimes with a darker forehead mark and dark cheek stripes. Pet lines come in several coat types: standard short hair, long hair (nicknamed 'teddy bear'), glossy satin and curly rex. Roomy cheek pouches stretch back as far as the shoulders.123

Personality what they are like

An independent, curious hamster that likes its own space. Syrians handled gently from a young age usually settle well with people and are easy to hold thanks to their size. They are most lively in the evening and at night, when they love to dig, climb, forage and fill their cheek pouches to stash food.3142

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High during evening and night; in the wild a single hamster may cover around 8 miles in a night of foraging. Provide a solid-surface wheel of about 27-32 cm, deep bedding for burrowing, tunnels, chews and scattered food for foraging.2567

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Syrians groom themselves; a sand dish can be offered as enrichment. Spot-clean every few days and deep-clean once or twice a month. Lift by scooping a hand under the whole body, staying close to the floor.856

Home where they are happiest

Blue Cross recommends at least 100 x 50 cm of floor and 50 cm height with at least 20 cm of diggable bedding; Wikipedia notes some guidelines suggest a minimum of 4,000 sq cm or more. Solid floor, paper or dust-free bedding (not cedar or pine), hay or shredded paper for nesting, several hides. Keep at about 18-26 °C.5186

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A good hamster pellet or seed mix as the base (Merck suggests a rodent pellet of 15-20% protein), small portions of greens, root vegetables and a little fruit such as apple, and occasional protein like insects. Treats should stay under about 10% of the diet. Always provide fresh water, and avoid grapes and rhubarb.6752

Company who they like around

Naturally solitary and territorial, so Syrians should always live on their own. They enjoy gentle interaction with their owner and plenty of enrichment in their enclosure.4215

The story where it all began

Scottish physicians living in Aleppo first described the animal in the 1797 edition of The Natural History of Aleppo, and in 1839 zoologist George Robert Waterhouse named it as its own species, Cricetus auratus. In 1930 Israel Aharoni of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem captured a mother and her litter near Aleppo, and the few that survived were bred in Jerusalem as laboratory animals. Offspring reached Britain in 1931, more pairs went to the Zoological Society of London in 1932, and from 1937 the descendants passed to private breeders. In 1946 Albert Marsh opened Gulf Hamstery, the first commercial hamster business, promoting them as pets. Genetic work shows domestic Syrians trace back to that 1930 capture, even though a separate batch left Syria for the US in 1971. Wild populations still live in a small area and are listed as threatened by the IUCN (Vulnerable per Animal Diversity Web; Wikipedia lists Endangered).123

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Syrian hamsters have one of the shortest pregnancies of any placental mammal, about 16 days.2

  2. 2

Their local Arabic name roughly means 'mister saddlebags', a nod to their huge cheek pouches.1

  3. 3

The cheek pouches stretch all the way back to the shoulders and are used to carry food home to the nest.3

  4. 4

Almost every pet Syrian hamster traces its ancestry to a single family captured near Aleppo in 1930.1

  5. 5

In the wild one hamster may cover around 8 miles in a single evening of foraging.2

  6. 6

Abandoned wild hamster burrows are often taken over by other animals such as toads.2

  7. 7

The original type specimen skin is kept at the Natural History Museum in London.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Syrian Hamster?

Feed a small amount of a good hamster pellet or seed mix daily, plus a tiny portion of greens or fruit a few times a week. Always provide fresh water and remove uneaten fresh food after a few hours. For exact amounts, check the food label and ask your vet.6752 Pet Wiki plan

What should a Syrian Hamster eat, and which foods are dangerous?

A balanced diet includes a hamster pellet or seed mix, plus small bits of greens, root veg, and occasional fruit like apple or protein like insects. Avoid grapes, rhubarb, and all foods listed as toxic by the ASPCA, such as chocolate, onion, garlic, and citrus. Treats should be under 10% of the diet.675210

Should I bathe a Syrian Hamster?

No, Syrian hamsters groom themselves and should never be bathed in water, as it can stress them and cause health issues. Instead, offer a sand dish for dust bathing, which also provides enrichment.856

Does a Syrian Hamster need brushing?

Short-haired Syrians don't need brushing, but long-haired ones may benefit from occasional gentle brushing to prevent tangles. Use a soft brush and keep sessions brief and calm.856

How do I look after a Syrian Hamster's nails and teeth?

Provide wooden chews and hard treats to help wear down teeth naturally. Check nails monthly and ask a vet or experienced owner to trim them if they get too long. Never cut into the quick.65 Pet Wiki plan

How much space and exercise does a Syrian Hamster need?

Aim for at least 100 x 50 cm of floor space with 50 cm height, and deep bedding for burrowing. Provide a large solid wheel (27-32 cm), tunnels, and scattered food for foraging to keep them active at night.518627 Pet Wiki plan

Should a Syrian Hamster live alone or with friends?

Syrian hamsters are solitary and territorial, so they must always live alone. They enjoy gentle interaction with you and plenty of enrichment in their own space.4215

How long does a Syrian Hamster live?

Syrian hamsters typically live between 1.5 and 3 years, with proper care and a good diet. Their lifespan can vary based on genetics and environment.3214

Is a Syrian Hamster a good pet for children?

Yes, with gentle handling and adult supervision, Syrian hamsters can be great for children due to their calm nature and larger size. They are most active in the evening, so plan interactions then.3142

How do I hold a Syrian Hamster?

Always scoop your hamster gently with both hands under its whole body, staying close to the floor or a soft surface. Never grab from above, and let the hamster come to you when it's awake and calm.856
