TICA gives about 9-15 lb for males and 6-12 lb for females. PetMD notes earlier generations can reach about 6.8 kg (15 lb) while later generations are often 3.6-5.4 kg (8-12 lb).
A long, athletic, well-muscled cat with a broad head, high cheekbones, big oval eyes and strong whisker pads. The short coat feels unusually soft and silky, almost like a pelt, and sheds little. Many Bengals carry 'glitter', a shimmer created by light catching translucent hair tips. The coat is either spotted, often with two-toned rosettes, or marbled with flowing swirls.215
Confident, curious and full of energy, the Bengal wants to be part of whatever is happening. It bonds closely with its people, likes to explore and climb, and chats with a mix of chirps, trills and meows. Personalities vary from busy extroverts to calmer souls, but most keep a kitten-like sense of fun for life.1256
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Very high. Plan daily interactive play, climbing, puzzle toys and training games. Many learn fetch and harness walking, and plenty of Bengals take happily to a cat exercise wheel.1654
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Light grooming. Brush weekly with a soft brush, trim nails about monthly, and keep ears dry after water play. Baths are optional, though some Bengals enjoy them.214
Home where they are happiest
Fine in a house or flat as long as there is plenty of vertical space: tall cat trees, wall shelves, sturdy scratching posts and, ideally, a cat wheel for burning off energy.46
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, good-quality commercial cat food, offered as several small meals. Food puzzles and lick mats make mealtimes a hunting game and help keep this active cat lean.4
Company who they like around
High. Bengals attach strongly to their family and want interaction every day. They usually live well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs after a careful introduction, but many dislike being picked up and held.6524
The story where it all began
In 1963 Californian breeder and conservationist Jean Mill paired a female Asian leopard cat with a black domestic tom, the first known deliberate cross of its kind. Around the same time Dr Willard Centerwall was producing similar hybrids for his own research, and Mill later obtained some of his cats as foundation stock. She combined them with spotted domestic cats to fix the wild look on a friendly, home-loving cat. The breed took its name from the leopard cat's scientific name, Prionailurus bengalensis. TICA accepted the Bengal as a new breed in 1986 and gave it championship status in 1991. It then spread worldwide, reaching the GCCF in 1997 and FIFe in 1999, with the CFA accepting it for registration in 2016 and championship in 2018. Today show and pet Bengals are many generations removed from their wild ancestor.2135
Fun facts for the dinner table
1
The breed name comes from the Asian leopard cat's Latin name, Prionailurus bengalensis, which means 'of Bengal'.1
2
TICA describes the Bengal as the only domestic breed with true rosette markings, the two-toned spots seen on leopards and jaguars.1
3
Many Bengals love water and may join their owners in the shower or splash in a dripping tap.2
4
Some coats have 'glitter', a sparkly sheen made by light reflecting off the hair tips.2
5
Plenty of Bengals will run on a cat exercise wheel, much like a hamster.5
6
By 2024 the Bengal was TICA's most popular breed, with close to 200,000 registered kittens.3
Where the name comes from the story behind it
The breed's name derives from the Asian leopard cat's taxonomic name, Prionailurus bengalensis, which is one of the Bengal cat's wild ancestors.3
I woke my human with a trill and a gentle headbutt, time to start the day! After a quick breakfast, I dashed to my exercise wheel and ran a few laps, feeling the wind in my fur. Then I fetched my favorite crinkle ball, dropping it at my human's feet until they threw it again. The afternoon was for climbing: I scaled my tall cat tree and surveyed my kingdom from the top. When my human tried to work, I sat on their keyboard, chirping for attention. Later, we practiced harness walking in the yard, sniffing every leaf. As the stars came out, I curled beside my human, purring a happy goodnight.
A made-up story, just for fun. Not advice of any kind.

1 tin of tuna in water, no salt added
1/2 cup finely diced cooked chicken
1/2 cup pure sweet potato puree (no added sweeteners)
How
Drain the tuna and place it in a mixing bowl.
Break the tuna into small bits with a fork.
Add the diced chicken to the bowl.
Slowly stir in the sweet potato puree until the mixture binds together, being careful not to make it too watery.
Shape the mixture into mini pancakes.
Serve to your cat as an occasional treat.
How much: Give small amounts occasionally, as treats should not exceed 10-15% of daily calorie allowance. Reduce main meals accordingly.
These crunchy biscuits are made with simple ingredients and are a healthier alternative to many shop-bought treats, helping to manage weight when given in moderation.

Cut out small biscuits using small biscuit cutters and place on the lined tray.
Bake for 20 minutes or until crunchy.
Allow to cool completely before storing.
