FCI and UKC standards give no weight. AKC's breed weight chart lists 12-18 lb (about 5.4-8.2 kg) for both sexes; VCA gives 13-15 lb (about 5.9-6.8 kg).
The outer coat is long, straight and hard to the touch (neither woolly nor silky) over a moderate undercoat, a combination suited to the cold, dry Tibetan highlands. A heavy fall of hair covers the eyes and the face has a beard and whiskers. Underneath is a small, sturdy dog that is longer than it is tall, with pendant, well-feathered ears, dark oval eyes and a high-set, plumed tail carried over the back, sometimes finishing in a small kink. Females are slightly smaller than males; the FCI standard gives about 25 cm at the withers for males.5610
Cheerful, bold and sure of itself, the Lhasa Apso is often the clown of the household with the people it knows, yet reserved and dignified with strangers. It was bred as an indoor sentry, so it notices everything and will announce visitors. Clever and independent, it likes to think for itself and responds best to patient, reward-based training with food or games rather than repetition or force.59410
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate. One or two daily walks plus indoor play covers most needs; ShowSight suggests about 30-45 minutes of activity a day and The Royal Kennel Club up to an hour. Tricks, puzzle toys and scent games are good for its busy mind. The breed prefers cooler weather, so exercise in the cooler parts of hot days.4108
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
A full coat needs thorough brushing and combing every day or every other day to prevent mats, working down to the skin on the legs, chest and underside. Many pet owners keep a shorter 'puppy clip' with a professional groomer instead. Keep hair out of the eyes, clean ears routinely, bathe about monthly, and trim nails and brush teeth regularly. Shedding is low.8410
Home where they are happiest
Adapts well to flats and apartments; a small to medium garden is plenty. Happiest living indoors close to its family.84
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, balanced food suited to small breeds and the dog's life stage. Lhasas usually hold a steady weight; if they start to gain, reduce calories and measure meals.4
Company who they like around
Deeply attached to familiar people and generally friendly with other dogs and pets, though it is naturally cautious with strangers, so early and ongoing socialisation matters. Enjoys play with respectful children and is safer meeting similar-sized dogs than very large ones.4106
The story where it all began
The Lhasa Apso comes from the high Himalayan regions of Tibet, where it has been kept for well over a thousand years; breed sources trace it back to at least around 800 AD. It lived inside monasteries and noble homes as a sentry that raised the alarm, while large mastiff-type dogs guarded the outside. Lamas regarded the dogs as bringers of good fortune, so they were rarely sold and were instead given as honoured gifts. Mixed Tibetan dogs reached Britain with military travellers in the early 1900s, where they were first called 'Lhasa Terriers' and shown together with what is now the Tibetan Terrier. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1908, a British breed club followed in 1933 and the Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Terrier were separated in 1934. In 1933 the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, sent a pair to the American traveller C. Suydam Cutting, and these founded the breed in the United States. The AKC accepted it in 1935 in the Terrier Group and moved it to the Non-Sporting Group in 1959, and the FCI gave definitive recognition in 1960.25876

Where the name comes from the story behind it
The breed name 'Lhasa Apso' comes from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and 'Apso', which is believed to mean 'bark lion' or 'goat-like', reflecting its role as a sentinel dog in Tibetan monasteries.11
Famous ones stars of the breed
Taikoo and Dinkai A pair of Lhasa Apsos given as a gift to the Cuttings by the Dalai Lama, which became the foundation of the breed in the West.11
I start my day with a stretch and a careful patrol of the house. I check every corner, you never know what might have changed overnight. When my human comes down, I do my clownish dance to make them laugh, then sit by the window to watch for visitors. A short walk in the cool morning air is my favorite. Back home, I solve my puzzle toy for a treat and nap in a sunbeam. In the afternoon, I announce the mail carrier with a dignified bark. Evening is for cuddles and maybe a game of fetch. I am the cheerful guardian of this home.

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Lhasa Apso, and at what times?
Feed your Lhasa Apso at least two measured meals a day, ideally at the same times each morning and evening. Puppies need three to four smaller meals. Follow the food label for amounts and check with your vet if you're unsure.412
What should a Lhasa Apso eat, and which foods are dangerous?
Give a complete, balanced food suited to small breeds and your dog's life stage. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts. Always avoid these and ask your vet about any other concerns.413
How often should I bathe a Lhasa Apso?
Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath about every three weeks, but you can adjust based on your dog's lifestyle. Use a gentle dog shampoo and always dry thoroughly to avoid skin issues.14Pet Wiki plan
How often does a Lhasa Apso need brushing?
A full coat needs daily brushing to prevent mats, especially on the legs and underside. Many owners keep a shorter 'puppy clip' with a professional groomer for easier care. Furry Diary recommends brushing every day.84Pet Wiki plan
How do I trim a Lhasa Apso's nails, and how often?
Trim nails every three weeks or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Use a dog nail clipper and cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick. If you're unsure, ask your vet or a groomer for a demonstration.14Pet Wiki plan
How much exercise does a Lhasa Apso need?
Your Lhasa Apso needs about 45 minutes of activity daily, split into one or two walks plus indoor play. Puzzle toys and scent games are great for its clever mind. On hot days, exercise during cooler hours.410Pet Wiki plan
How do I look after a Lhasa Apso's teeth and ears?
Brush teeth daily with dog toothpaste, and check ears weekly for moisture or dirt. Clean ears gently with a vet-recommended solution, never pushing anything into the canal. Furry Diary suggests daily brushing and weekly ear checks.14Pet Wiki plan
How long does a Lhasa Apso live?
A Lhasa Apso typically lives 12 to 15 years, often enjoying a long, healthy life with good care. Regular vet check-ups and a balanced diet help support this lifespan.742
Is a Lhasa Apso good with children and other pets?
Yes, it is generally good with respectful children and other pets, especially if raised together. It can be cautious with strangers, so early socialisation is important. Supervise interactions with very large dogs.4106
Can a Lhasa Apso be left alone?
This breed is deeply attached to its family and may not enjoy long periods alone. It can adapt to short absences with proper training, but it's best to avoid leaving it for more than a few hours. Consider a dog walker or pet sitter if needed.410
