FCI and UKC standards set no weight. Wikipedia gives 18-23 kg (40-50 lb) for males and 16-18 kg (35-40 lb) for females; Hill's gives a broader 23-32 kg (50-70 lb) for adults without splitting by sex.
A crisp, wiry outer jacket lies close to the body over a shorter, softer undercoat; the best coats are straight or just slightly crinkled. The largest of the terriers, the Airedale is muscular and fairly compact, with a long flat head, small V-shaped ears and a level, upright stance.152
Outgoing, self-assured and brave without being quarrelsome. Airedales are quick-witted, full of fun and often a bit of a clown at home, yet alert and watchful enough to make good guardians. They form strong bonds with their family and are usually good-natured with children they grow up with.1546

An energetic, working breed that needs at least an hour a day of exercise combined with mental challenges. Airedales enjoy obedience, agility, rally, scent work, tracking and swimming.346
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Brush the wiry coat a few times a week; the Royal Kennel Club lists grooming as a daily task. Hand-stripping a few times a year keeps the proper harsh texture and tidy outline. Shedding is light. Trim nails regularly and check ears weekly.34
Home where they are happiest
Happiest in a larger home with a secure garden and plenty to do; bored Airedales will invent their own projects.34
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, good-quality food made for large, active breeds, with growing puppies on a large-breed puppy formula until they mature. Portion to keep a fit, muscular shape.4
Company who they like around
A people-oriented dog that likes to be involved in family activities and bonds deeply with its household. It can be reserved and protective with strangers, so early socialisation is worthwhile.46
The story where it all began
The Airedale was developed in the mid-1800s by working people in the valley of the River Aire in Yorkshire, who wanted a bigger terrier able to hunt rats, otters and other quarry along the riverbanks and in the water. They crossed the old Black and Tan (Old English) Terrier with the Otterhound, and other terriers may also have contributed. The dogs were first known as Waterside or Bingley Terriers, and the name Airedale Terrier came into use around 1879 as show classes were offered for them. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1886 and the American Kennel Club followed in 1888, a few years after the first Airedales reached the USA in 1885; the Airedale Terrier Club of America was founded in 1900. Champion Master Briar (1897-1906) is regarded as a founding sire of the modern type. In the First World War Airedales carried messages, found wounded soldiers and hauled supplies for the Red Cross, and they later served with police forces in Britain, Germany and Japan. In the early 1920s the Airedale was among the most popular breeds in America, helped by owners such as Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge.27531

I woke up with a bounce, ready for adventure. My human took me to the river, where I splashed and swam, my wiry coat dripping with joy. I found a stick and proudly presented it, wagging my tail. We played fetch until I was breathless, then I sniffed every interesting smell along the path. Back home, I did my happy dance for a treat, then curled up for a nap, dreaming of the next chase. In the afternoon, I guarded the garden, barking at a leaf that dared to move. My human laughed and called me a clown. I love being the king of fun, and every day is a game I win with a wag.

Airedale Terrier tip
Airedales are prone to obesity and pancreatitis, so choose low-fat, high-protein treats and use them sparingly during training. Always avoid fatty human foods and table scraps.
Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise. Terms of use
Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Airedale Terrier, and at what times?
Feed adult Airedales at least two meals a day, and puppies three to four smaller meals. Follow the food label for amounts and ask your vet for a schedule that keeps your dog fit.411
What should an Airedale Terrier eat, and which foods are dangerous?
A complete, good-quality food for large, active breeds is best. Avoid grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, onions, garlic, and other foods listed as toxic by the ASPCA. Always check with your vet for specific concerns.412
How often should I bathe an Airedale Terrier?
Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 56 days, but the ASPCA says at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your dog gets very dirty or has skin issues.13Pet Wiki plan
How often does an Airedale Terrier need brushing?

How do I trim an Airedale Terrier's nails, and how often?
Trim nails when you hear them clicking on the floor, roughly every 28 days per Furry Diary's plan. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick. Ask your vet or a groomer to show you how.13Pet Wiki plan

This energetic breed needs at least an hour of exercise daily, plus mental challenges. Furry Diary's plan suggests about 120 minutes a day. They enjoy activities like obedience, agility, and swimming.346Pet Wiki plan
How do I look after an Airedale Terrier's teeth and ears?

How long does an Airedale Terrier live?
Airedale Terriers typically live between 11 and 14 years. Regular vet checkups and a healthy lifestyle help them enjoy a long, happy life.423
Is an Airedale Terrier good with children and other pets?
Airedales are usually good-natured with children they grow up with and form strong family bonds. They can be reserved with strangers, so early socialisation is important. Their compatibility with other pets varies and depends on training and individual temperament.1546
Can an Airedale Terrier be left alone?
Airedales are people-oriented and bond deeply with their family, so they may struggle with long periods alone. Boredom can lead to mischief. Provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and consider a dog walker or daycare if you are away often.463
