A tiny, rounded canary that looks like a scaled-down Border. It has a round, well-filled head, a body that is round from every angle, tight smooth feathering, wings meeting neatly below the tail base, and a slim tail. It stands at about 60 degrees.21
Preens and bathes itself. Keep numbers sensible so the flight is not overcrowded.3
Home where they are happiest
Happy in an aviary or in breeding cages with enough space to avoid crowding; keep the cage out of draughts and strong direct sun.31
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Canary seed mix plus greens, fruit and vegetables.3
Company who they like around
Social and fine in mixed groups in an aviary; separate cocks in the breeding season if they squabble.3
The story where it all began
As the Border canary grew larger after the Second World War, fanciers in Fife, Scotland, worked in the 1950s to bring back the small original size. The result was the Fife Fancy, which has become one of the most popular canary breeds in Britain.13

Treats they will love homemade and simple
Budgie Seed Bells
A fun homemade treat that mimics shop-bought seed bells, giving budgies a foraging activity and a tasty reward.
You need
150g bird seed mix
2 egg whites
Rapeseed oil
Greaseproof paper
Small terracotta pots
20cm lengths of wire
How
Beat the egg whites until frothy.
Mix the frothy egg whites with the bird seed mix.
Grease the greaseproof paper with a little rapeseed oil and line the insides of the terracotta pots.
Fill the pots with the seed mixture.
Insert both ends of a 20cm wire through the drainage hole in the base of the pot, so a loop of wire sits inside the mixture.
Bake the pots in a cool oven at 80-90°C (175-200°F) for 90 minutes, checking after the first hour to ensure the mixture has set.
Allow to cool completely, then gently remove the seed bells from the pots and peel away the paper.
Hang from the cage roof by looping the wire ends through and around the bars, ensuring no sharp ends are accessible.
How much: Offer one seed bell occasionally as a treat, not as a daily food.
Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise. Terms of use
